Jim Furyk Shoots Golf’s First 58
Jim Furyk’s 59, shot in 2013, is now officially his second-best round of golf.
The 46-year-old American shot a 58 in the fourth round of the Travelers Championship on Sunday, finishing the day with at 12-under to also set a new course record at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
He was 4-under through four holes and had four birdies in a row to end the front nine with a 27. He ran that streak to seven straight by opening the first three holes of the back nine.
After parring 13, 14, and 15, he was stuck at 11-under, then dropped to 12-under with a 23-foot birdie putt on the par-3 No. 16. He finished with pars on 17 and 18 to set the record.
Ironically, it’s unlikely the 58 will give Furyk the victory. He was 1-over to start the round, and finished 11-under, putting him fifth on the leaderboard. Daniel Berger is in the lead at 15-under, followed by the trio of Russell Knox, Trevor van Aswegen, and Russell Henley at 12-under.
Furyk previously was one of six players tied for the record-low round of 59. His 59 came in 2013.
On Sunday, Furyk climbed 65 spots on the leaderboard. Berger wasn’t too off a 62 himself on Saturday, recording nine birdies and a bogey.
