Countdown to The Masters: 22 Days
As of Thursday, March 17, The Masters, the first Major of the 2016 golf season, is 22 days away. To celebrate the coming of arguably the most gorgeously visual event in all of sports, here’s a countdown to Augusta featuring a champion a day.
Jose Maria Olazabal made the shot of the tournament at the most critical of times to win the 1994 Masters; a birdie on No. 15 that took his 1-stroke lead to a 2-stroke lead and gave him the title after finishing third two years before.
He became the second Spaniard to win the tournament, following Seve Ballesteros (1980, 1983), and defeated Tom Lehman by two strokes. He also continued Europe’s hot streak, giving the continent its sixth win in seven years at Augusta.
Olazabal looked nowhere near a contender on Day 1, struggling to a 74, seeing him fall six stroke behind leader Larry Mize. His second-round 67 saw him climb to 3-under, within two strokes of the lead.
Lehman took the lead with a 69 on Saturday, moving to 7-under with Olzabal a stroke behind. He held that one-stroke lead until No. 8 when Olzabal tied him at 8-under with a birdie. Lehman’s bogey on No. 12 dropped him out of the lead as Mize rose up to tie for first.
After his eagle on 15, Olazabal opened the door a crack by bogeying 17, but parred the 18th while Lehman bogeyed it to wrap up the win.
