Bubba Watson Takes Foot Out of Mouth

Two days after announcing his only reason to compete in the Waste Management Phoenix Open was to appease sponsor, world No. 5 Bubba Watson has done a major 180-degree turn.

“I have to apologize,” Watson said on Friday in Arizona. “I used the wrong words. I have nothing against the fans and the tournament. The fans have been great. I’ve lived here every winter for eight years.”

Watson said his earlier comments were directed towards the course itself, not the city.

“I’m not a fan of the golf course, I’ve said that for the last, this would make 10 years, but I’m here for the excitement.”

That excitement is brought on by Phoenix’s extraordinarily large gallery, which topped 200,000 for Saturday’s third round, and whom was none too pleased with Watson’s earliest comments.

It was less than a year ago that an anonymous poll of golfers taken by ESPN saw Watson named the golfer that fellow pros would not help out if they saw him in a fight in the parking lot, garnering 22.6% of the vote.
