Fowler Charges Into Lead at Abu Dhabi
American Rickie Fowler has taken the lead at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship as the third round concluded Sunday morning, shooting a 7-under 65 in the third round to move to 13-under, giving him a two-stroke lead.
Fog and darkness have been the nemesis of the tournament, but things were progressing nicely Sunday towards a conclusion. Fowler shot a bogey-free Round 3.
His lead is two Joost Luiten, who posted his second straight 68 to move to 11-under.
Most impressive has been Thomas Pieters, who rocketed up 42 spots on the leaderboard following his 8-under 64 to tie for third at 10-under with Branden Grace, Matthew Baldwin, Byeong Hun An, and Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy, Grace, and Hun An were all in contention for the Race to Dubai title here a month ago. McIlroy has been the runner-up at this tournament in each of the past two years.
The crowd at 9-under includes Henrik Stenson and Ian Poulter, who has not won a Tour event since 2002.
World No. 1 Jordan Spieth notched his second 68 in three days to reach 7-under. He did not commit a single bogey on the round.
