Fabian Gomez’s name wasn’t at the top of the leaderboard throughout the first 3-1/2 rounds of the Sony Open in Hawaii; but it was there when it mattered most.

Gomez rattled off seven straight birdies and took out Brandt Snedeker in the second hole of a playoff to win the tournament, his second on the PGA Tour.

He was four strokes behind the leaders to start the day, but rattled off birdie after birdie starting on No. 6, and stroked one in from 20 feet away on No. 18. Snedeker tapped in a four-foot birdie to force the playoff. Both men parred the first playoff hole, and Gomez notched another birdie on the second go round for the victory.

Gomez fired a 62 on the final day, finishing 20-under and going 64-65-62 over the final 54 holes. He nearly blew it by bogeying 13 and 14 after the birdie streak.

Zac Blair came close to making it a three-man playoff, shooting a closing-round 67 to reach 19-under. No other player finished within three strokes of Gomez and Snedeker. American Kevin Kisner, who was 14-under through 54 holes, struggled to a 1-under 70, mired by double bogeys on No. 8 and No. 17.
