The UK’s Ross McGowan tied a course record, firing a 9-under 62 to open up a 3-stroke lead at the Joburg Open on Friday.

With four birdies and a bogey on the front nine, McGowan was 3-under at the turn, then took off with a birdie on 10, an eagle on 12, a birdie on 14 and another eagle on 15.

It was a huge positive for McGowan, who has seen injuries limit him to just 27 starts over the past five seasons. His last and only win came at the Madrid Masters in 2009.

His lead is three over South Africans Jean Hugo nd Haydn Porteous, fellow Brit Anthony Wall, and Chile’s Felipe Aguilar. All four men shot between 65 and 67 on the day to sit at 11-under.

Sitting at 9-under are Justin Walters, the Day 1 leader who slid back seven spots despite shooting a 2-under 69, and Ireland’s Paul Dunne, who fired a red-hot 63, just one shot off the frantic pace set by McGowan. Dunne rattled off four birdies on the front nine and four more on the back.
