Former No. 1 Vijay Singh, who hasn’t won a PGA tournament in 7-1/2 years, is among four co-leaders at 7-under after the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Singh was meticulous with seven birdies on the day, getting hot at the turn with four birdies in five holes between No. 8 and No. 12. Currently ranked 233rd in the world, Singh has a history here, winning the event in 2005 by one stroke over Ernie Els.

He’s tied for first with Morgan Hoffman, Ricky Barnes, and Brandt Snedeker. A bogey on No. 5 cost Hoffman an outright place at the top. Otherwise he compiled six birdies and an eagle.

Snedeker has only completed 16 holes because of darkness, but was 4-under between 10 and 16. Barnes birdied four straight holes between No. 7 and No. 10 to solidify his spot.

Slightly overshadowed by Singh is one of the men just a shot off the lead – 59-year-old Fred Funk who was tied for the lead until a bogey 5 on No. 16. Also at 6-under is Open Championship winner Zach Johnson.
