Patrick Reed needed an eagle on No. 18 to keep the lead away from Jordan Spieth on Day 1 of the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, as the No. 1 player in the world looked to start up where he left off in 2015.

The eagle was a 15-footer that gave Reed, the defending champion at the TOC a 65 on the day. Spieth had a bogey-free round to finish at 66.

Reed was only 2-under through 12 holes before catching fire with consecutive birdies on 13-15 and another on 17. Spieth, who won five times in 2015, was more methodical, three birdies on the front nine, four more on the back.

The two have hardly lapping the field early on. Three more players are 6-under, and an additional seven are within four strokes of the lead, including Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler.

Fowler bogeyed No. 2 and was still just 1-under through 13 before birdying three of the last five holes.

World No. 2 Jason Day is five strokes off the lead after shooting a 3-under 70. The Aussie played a bogey-free round. Twenty-five of the 32 players invited are at least one stroke under par after one round.

A few of those on the wrong side of zero are Graeme McDowell (+2), Davis Love III (+2), and Open Championship winner Zach Johnson (+2).
