Garcia’s 64 Leads BMW Masters
A relatively quiet year for Sergio Garcia started getting a little noisy on Thursday in Shanghai.
The Spaniard who has gone almost two years with a victory fired an opening-round 64 to lead the BMW Masters by a stroke in the third leg of the Final Series.
Garcia racked up nine birdies in the first 14 holes before bogeying No. 17. He leads by one stroke over Korea’s Byeong Hun An, and France’s Victor Dubuisson, who won the Turkish Airlines Open two weeks ago, and could make a major play for the overall title if he wins again or finishes in the top five.
Plenty of eyes are on Danny Willett, who is second in the overall Race to Dubai standings to Rory McIlroy by 74,000 points. Willett needs to finish at least 28th this week to overtake the idle McIlroy, but is tied for 48th after the first day, shooting an even-par 72.
