Malnati Grasps Sanderson Title
Another week, another first-time winner on the PGA Tour.
On Monday, it was 28-year-old Peter Malnati emerging the victor by a single stroke at the rain-soaked Sanderson Farms Championship, firing a closing-round 67 to finish 18-under, defeating William McGirt and David Toms by a single stroke.
At even par through six holes after back-to-back bogeys, Malanati righted his ship and rattled off birdies on 7, 9, 11, 12, and 15. He then waited several hours until the final trio made their rounds.
Both McGirt and Toms had chances to at least force a playoff, if not win the tournament outright. McGirt bogeyed No. 16 to fall a stroke back and Toms finished with three straight pars after pulling within one stroke of the lead with four birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine.
After leading for the first two rounds, Roberto Castro saw the wheels come off the wagon in the third round, stroking five bogeys to finish with a 75. He rebounded with a 68 in the fourth round, but finished tied for fourth, two strokes back.
