Willett Challenges McIlroy for Dubai Lead

With his big surge to third place at the WGC-HSBC Champions on Sunday, England’s Danny Willett has closed the gap on Rory McIlroy for the top spot in the Race to Dubai rankings.

McIlroy has 3,393,923 points to Willett’s 3,319,710, a difference of just 74,213. It’s the closest anyone’s been to McIlroy in months and is a testament to Willett’s health – he’s played 21 qualifying events this season, McIlroy just 11.

With two events yet to play and huge points on the line, Willett has a very real chance of the biggest honor on the European Tour, as do several players trailing the pair.

Shane Lowry, Louis Oosthuizen, Justin Rose and Branden Grace all have at least 2.467 million points, meaning a win at either of the final two events could easily propel them into the lead.

Next stop in the Final Series is the BMW Masters in Shanghai.
