Thomas Takes CIMB Lead with 61

Just like on the European Tour, an unheralded player’s 61 was the talk of the PGA on Friday.

Twenty-two-year old Justin Thomas shot an 11-under 61 to reach 15-under for the tournament, taking a 1-stroke lead over Brendan Steele at the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

Thomas fired eight birdies and an eagle 3 on No. 3 to set a new course record on Friday. He was a ho-hum 4-under with a 68 on Thursday.

Thomas has started off his PGA career as hot as any player in recent history, following up a third-place finish at the Frys.com Open two weeks ago.

His lead is one over Brendan Steele, who was almost as hot on Friday, firing a 9-under 63 to reach -14 for the two rounds.

Eleven players are within five shots of the lead through two rounds, including former No. 1 Adam Scott, one of just two non-Americans in the top 10.

Scott is looking for his first PGA win since the Colonial in 2014.
