Shriners Hospital for Children Open Preview

The 33rd installment of the Shriners Hospital for Children Open will kick off play Thursday in Las Vegas, with $6.4 million and 500 FedEx Cup points on the line.

American Ben Martin returns as champion after firing a 20-under 264 last October. The event has been won by an American five straight times, and nine of the last 10 years.

The TPC Summerlin, a par-71, 7,235-yard course is the home of the event, featuring one of the most massive Par-5s on the PGA Tour, the 606-yard No. 13.

Headlining the field is No. 5 Rickie Fowler, along with four other players in the Top 35 including former champion Kevin Na, who just missed a win last week at the Frys.com Open, and Jimmy Walker, who is fresh off his performance in the Presidents Cup in South Korea.

This tournament played host to one of the greatest rounds of golf ever 24 years ago when it was held at the Sunrise Golf Club.

In 1991, ChipĀ  Beck fired a 59 on the par-72 course in the third round of the tournament, just the second man to do so in a PGA Tour event. It so happened that Hilton was offering a $1 million bonus to anyone breaking 60 in a PGA event, which Beck did, and donated half the money to charity.

His round included 13 birdies – still a PGA record – and five pars. Remarkably he did not win the tournament, coming in third. However, the 59 endures and is even a part of his Twitter handle.
