British Masters Preview

Dunhill Links Champion Thorbjorn Olesen will pair up with host Ian Poulter and 51-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez in one the signature groupings at the British Masters supported by Sky Sports, which kicks off Thursday at the Woburn Golf Club in the UK.

The group just before that trio is nearly as heralded – Graeme McDowell, Luke Donald, and Tommy Fleetwood are on the 10th at 8:10 .m.

This is the first British Masters to be played since 2008, which makes Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano its unofficial defending champion, although he hasn’t played an event this year and is ranked No. 409 in the world.

The tournament ran every year from 1946 to 2008 save one under a host of different names, but could not find a sponsor at the end of its association with the Quinn Group in 2008 and was removed from the European Tour schedule the following season.

A bit of trivia; in 1967, the first live hole-in-one was recorded on British television as Tony Jacklin struck an ace at Royal St. George’s.

The British Masters is one of just three tournaments remaining before The Final Series begins on October 29, meaning players are scrambling to get better positioned in the Race to Dubai standings, or to make it into the top 60 to be invited to the lucrative, post-season event.

The four tournaments on the Final Series, which span Turkey,  China, and the UAE, hold a combined $30.5 million in prize money.
