Pair of Rookies Lead Dunhill Board
Rookies Jimmy Mullen and Paul Dunne, fresh off helping Great Britain and Ireland win the Walker Cup in September, each fired a 64 to sit atop the leaderboard with Sweden’s Kristoffer Broberg after one round at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews on Thursday.
It’s not the first time Dunne has played well at St. Andrews this year; he was tied for the lead going into the final round of The Open two months ago. Mullen is only the fourth player in history to win all four of his Walker Cup matches.
Mullen’s 8-under 64 on Thursday came despite two bogeys. He compensated with eight birdies and an eagle 2 on the par-4 No. 6.
Dunne started off on fire, with three straight birdies between No. 2 and No. 4, and was 5-under at the turn. He gave two of those strokes back with bogeys on No. 10 and No. 13, but turned it around quickly with a sequence of birdie, ace, birdie on 14-16.
The more seasoned Broberg was cool as a cucumber throughout his round: four birdies on the front nine and four more on the back nine en route to a 64.
