A new champion will be crowned at the WGC-Bridgestone this week, as defending champion Rory McIlroy continues to be sidelined by an ankle injury.
With eight-time champion Tiger Woods ineligible, the focus is squarely back on No. 2 Jordan Spieth, who with a win here would displace McIlroy as No. 1 in the world.
He’ll be paired in the early going with The Open Championship winner Zach Johnson, who like Spieth has two Majors in his pocket. They tee off at 2:15 p.m. Thursday on the front nine.
That’s just one of several magnificent pairings on the day, as the top draws from the PGA and European Tour convene in Akron, Ohio, at the Firestone Country Club’s South Course, which is a par 70 that sits 7,400 yards in length.
Other notable pairings for Thursday include:
10:25 a.m., #10, Jason Day and Rickie Fowler
10:35 a.m., #10, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson
10:45 a.m., #10, Martin Kaymer and Adam Scott
10:55 a.m., #10, Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed
2:25 p.m., #1, Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson
