Roope’s 63 Claims Madeira Islands Title
Finland’s Roope Kakko dominated the course at the Clube de Golf in the Madeira Islands on Sunday for a second straight day, firing a 63 to win the Madeira Islands Open by three strokes with a 24-under 264.
Kakko, who ended Saturday with three straight birdies, had three more in a row on 5-7 Sunday, and was even better on the back nine, shooting 5-under with an eagle 2 on the 395-yard No. 10.
Kakko started the day tied for the lead with Scotland’s Scott Henry, and looked to be in the fight of the week as Henry opened play with three straight birdies to lead by two strokes after four holes.
Kakko took the lead back with his three straight birdies and pushed it to two strokes at the turn as Henry bogeyed No. 9.
Scotland’s Andrew MacArthur finished third at 18-under after firing his own 63 on Sunday. MacArthur torched the course with five birdies and an eagle on the front nine to sit 6-under at the turn.
Day 3 co-leader Pontus Widegren was unable to keep pace with the leaders, sliding back to an even-par 72 to finish tied for fourth at 16-under.
Kakko won €100,000 and earned 100,000 Race to Dubai points for his victory.
