Justin Rose will defend his Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open title against the likes of American Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson beginning Thursday at Gullane Golf Club in East Lothian, Scotland.

This is the44th installment of the tournament, played on the par-70, 7,133-yard course. It’s the first time at Gullane after recent stints at the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, Castle Sutart Golf Links, and Loch Lomond Golf Club.

Its £3 million prize is the largest of any event not co-hosted by the PGA Tour.

Rose has not won an event on either the PGA or European Tour since his victory here a year ago. He finished tied for second at The Masters in April. He’ll be paired Thursday and Friday with Mickelson, who won here in 2013 with a 17-under, and Scotland’s own Marc Warren.

Another top 20 American, Rickie Fowler, is matched with Jamie Donaldson and Ian Poulter in the early going.

The heavy dose of Top 20 players in the field can be associated at least in part with the fact that the last four Open Championship winners also played in the Scottish Open the week before.
